Default what would you do

I have 350 miles on the clock a friend want me to come and see him but he is 1000 miles round trip. I realy do not want to spend the weekend at a dealer getting an oil change. If I wait to come back there will be about 1500 on the clock.

Highway driving?

Putting that many highway miles on for break in is a bad idea.

You want to vary the rpm and load for break in, otherwise your rings wont seat well.

ONLY if you don't vary your rpm and load... as you go on to point out:

Personally, I prefer to have trip/highway miles take up my break-in. Then, I'm lucky that I live 6 hours from home on 75% windy road, where you have to constantly alter rpm and load. : P It's a fun drive to and from my home town.

I'd say go for it, even more so if you didn't follow the recommended break-in, which suggests first oil change at 3000, not 1000 which many enthusiasts go by. I would think it you've been driving spiritedly for 350 miles, adding 1k more will not only get you over the factory break in period with easier (and potentially varied, if you work at it) miles AND can knock loose all that much more, which as I understand is the reason to change oil at 1k rather than 3k.

Finally, you could always go to a quick lube while you're visiting your friend, around 850 if my math holds. That or, buy/bring oil change products while you're out of town and do it yourself if you prefer to change your own oil. Not as convenient as being home, but not something that can't be done with a minimum of space/tools.

Enjoy! Putting miles on my new baby is sad, already at 3.5k, but then that's why we bought these cars... to be driven!

Do it! Drive there since you did not do a break in by the book. 1000 miles is nothing.

Being as the 08 STI uses the same filter as previous year STIs (and 2.5L WRX if I'm not mistaken?) just about any quick lube should have a compatible filter.

While you could bring an OEM filter, not sure if they would use it... Quick lubes (or the good one's anyway) have some funny rules to prevent damage to customer cars (and law suits). When I had my first 08 STI oil change last week, the shop had to first confirm themselves that the filter hadn't changed from year to year, despite my saying it was the same. My point is, while I appreciated this, the quick lube you go to may only be "able" to use a filter they provide. Same with the crush washer for that matter.

Can't hurt to bring them, I suppose... if you do change your oil on your own, they'll be spares. If you're like me and rely on quick lube shops, you may want to leave the parts to them.

PS - One other thing to consider, if you strongly prefer OEM over aftermarket filter and there is a Subbie Dealer in the town you'll be visiting, you could schedule a change then??

from now on i'll be sticking with the subary suggested oil change interval.

I didn't change my oil until 3000. In my opinion, you'll be fine.

Freeway driving is fine if you pay a little attention to varying load and RPM. Drive some in 4th, 5th , 6th... give it some juice in each from time to time when you want to accelerate and same with slowing down. It's not hard to do, but definitely don't stick it in 6th, put the cruise on and fall asleep.

This is how I got my new 08 down from Portland to the SF Bay area on I5/101, although 101 is fun enough not to have to try very hard to vary engine speed and load!

Many sources (including some I trust very much) tell me that Subaru is using a break-in oil in their cars, and that it is not a good idea to change until the recommended 3000 miles. This is because newer oils contain little (or no) ZDDP because large amounts can harm the cats over time. However, ZDDP is important to avoid scoring and grooving in new engines. In older cars, this stuff is absolutely critical to break-in.
