I like the Michelin A/S tires because at 85 mph on dry pavement they are almost as good as dedicated Summer tires (and just about as quiet), but they are also very good when it's slippery.
yeah...read reviews with those already using those tires in similar conditions and in the same vehicle to get the best advice...otherwise, i only have had the stock (summer) and these dunlop (winter) which i just got so idk what those would be like not to mention the control with the 08...but im also in the new england area and a dedicated winter tire is a safer and more secure bet in dealing with the weather conditions we get up here especially going through those mountain passes with ease

Well, you've been very helpful and I'll do some more research between now and next September. The Tirerack survey says that some of those Winter tires are pretty good on dry pavement too.

no problem....yeah my dunlop winter sport 3d's have held up very well both on wet and dry pavement in both normal and pushed driving conditions....i had a "trial" with a set of continental extreme contacts which were fun in giving, but the dunlops are noticeably much more holding and controllable...for instance, it was much easier pulling donuts in the snow with the conti's then these dunlops

Donuts are to be avoided, especially the involuntary ones.

I don't race, rally or do donuts. But I do drive fast. Uphill traction is never an issue with a Subaru, unless the snow is really deep or it's black ice. The practical issue is whether the tires will grip when you have to slow down.

yeah well this was my first winter with an sti so it was necessarily a must experience for me having been in an open secure parking lot with plenty of snow/ice as to not torture my beast...overall, the dunlops gripped superior to the other ones i tried and giving it a few tests of my own with sudden braking and whatnot, def the best worthy investment for these winter tires as i literally had to try to get any such slippage in order to find its limits ...
