Default Picked up my White/Gold 08 Today...Impressions

It was less than a month ago that I placed my order and today the white hustle arrived. Some initial impressions after 50 miles in rainy NY weather...

Appearance: The car simply looks amazing in person...The fender flares scream rally and there is no mistaking that the purpose of this car is to drive fast over any surface, anywhere, anytime. Big improvement over my 04...but then again, it's new and my 04 made me feel the same way, um, back in 04.

Driving: After hearing all of the negative reviews about steering, I half expected to feel absolutely nothing through the wheel. While it's not as communicative as my 04, it is fine and does the job.

Shifting at 4,000rpms sucks. It's like getting a hand job when you paid for the works...but I'll be patient, only 950 miles to go, woohoo!

The seats suck if you're looking for tons of support, but sitting in an hour of stop and go traffic, I appreciated their comfort...I do miss the two-tone blue seats of my 04 though...Subaru succeeded in graduating the interior from boy racer to sophisticated racer, but if given the choice, i'd prefer the 04 seats...

The new suspension definitely takes the bumps better...over a bumpy road, the car reminded me of my brothers old 2001 M3...that's a compliment...In fact, this car feels very BMW like...that's good and bad...great for inspirering confidence and going fast, but a little numb at the limit...the limits are so high that when you reach them, you sort of just have to trust the car because it's not communicating enough through the wheel...Again, the feel is not bad, but it's softer and easier to live with than previous models.

Brakes are new but everytime I pressed them the car slowed down, so thank you jesus.

Irritating things: My Subaru delearship gave me a brochure and materials for everything BUT the STi...???? Seriously, after spending 40k on a Subaru I expect them to get the details right...And speaking of details, where is the stitching on the wheel? where is the STi on the key? Where is the STi on the radiator? Where is the turbo boost gauge? I will be doing some work to the interior to make it more "sporty"...Right now it's boring to look at.

Overall: The greatest 50 miles so far of my life!!!!!! Just kidding...Or am I? I am very happy and can't wait to explore this car...I know that it will provide daily driving pleasure, no matter the weather, no matter the road surface....I fell in love with rally cars in 04 and this 08 feels like i've upgraded to a better girlfriend...1000 miles before my right foot gets to have sex with her, can't wait.

congrats

after seeing one in person I like the look even though the rear is a bit dumpy. The reason why i would even contemplating is the fact that very very few cars out there are built to feel like a race car. i hate numb feeling cars that are basically built for the speedlimit in mind. The STi was born from race rally cars and for the love of god will other companies wake up and realize that is what a true enthusiest wants?? There is so very very little choices to us "real drivers" out there.

I can't hate subaru for making a hatch, as long as it stays true to its roots and stick with making race cars first and mass produced race cars based on those race cars second!

Tbagger, I agree...That's why I love my brother's viper so much...it's a no compromise race car for the road...what's so incredible about a car that has 500bhp is that it's fun at any speed because it communicates so many beautiful things to the driver via the wheel...The new STi is much more docile and rounded in areas where it should be sharper...but like you said, there are not many options out there and the STi is still 95% better than anything out there...problem for SUbby is that other 5% just happens to the evo (in terms of handling).

I'll get some photos up soon...didn't want to share her with you guys all wet from the rain...

Does anyone know if the STi drivers manual is up anywhere online?

Congrats! I can sense your excitement in your words, that's great! PM me with your email and I can send you a pdf of the manual. You can download for yourself if you want if you go to the owners section of the Subaru site...I think you may need your VIN but I may be mistaken.

If you register on the owners site and then contact customer service through there, they can mail you the appropriate manual, they did it for me.

Congrats on your purchase, you picked the most awesome color combo there is! <- biased.

Nice write up. You summed up the initial experience well, especially the rainy NY part.
I've had my STI for about a month now and it's been raining or snowing about 2/3 of those days.

Throw a set of the Rally Armor mud flaps on the car (they will be out soon!) and it will look like the rally car that it's supposed to be.
