STi is a very nice car for the money, but it is definitely not the best performance car on the market. It has a lot of potential and easy(cheap) to mod though.

Stock vs Stock, I think Sti felt pretty weak in power compared to my ///M cars and other high performance cars i drove before(GT3,RS4). The stock 335 "felt" much faster and stronger than STi. Having own many performacne cars, I found it is very true that most japaneses cars are overrated while european cars are relatively underrated from factory.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed when i first got my Sti until i got Cobb Stage 1 flashed. My Sti finally felt like a proper 300hp car. Although it is not really fair to compare STi to cars i mentioned above(since they are much more expensive),I realized that Peak hp and trq hide a lot of things behind them.

However,I was totally amazed how easy and inexpensive to gain performance in this car.You can make your own Sti a very unique and fast car with a very resonable budget.

Everything makes a difference at how a car sounds: v6, L6, H6, displacement, fuel system, intake style, ect
All that effects the power, performance, and reliability.

Well... I like the "typewriter" sound a lot. S54 is my favorite engine. It is very responsive and a great race proven motor.

I was looking at the 335's before I got my 08 STi....I guess the thing that really turned the tide was when I did some research on BMW reliability. The 335 may perform a bit better than the STi, but at least I won't have to worry about my car falling apart.

Also, whoever said the G37 is underpowered? WTF it has a 3.7L packing 330hp...how is that underpowered? I would've taken a G37, but it didn't give me that "in touch with the road" feel I get from my STi...plus I love the 5-door...unlike others...I think the hatch is great. The pics with the WRC wing make it look almost like a sedan anyway.

Totally ditto. BMW is not reliable by any means and the fact is the 335i with options is in a different price category (jeesz I can get a Vette that is faster than both and will mod-for-mod out run both of them).

I think the G37 motor is quite nice but I understand why people call it weak. If you look at its torque curve, its a very odd beast. Can someone comment on its modability? I suspect its not going to be very good without forced induction.

As for the STI not "feeling" fast, I agree. Subaru was smart this time around. As all the tuners are saying, this generation's STI is a beast and should easily yield high output with some modest changes. In order to make a car more livable, you need to keep the lower RPM range easy to handle in traffic, i.e. you really want the torque curve to be strong yet linear but above everyday driving RPMs. I'm not sure I would call the car detuned, but its easy to see that with some small mods (Cobb stage 1 or a full stage 2 kit), you can get 330-375BHP reliably.

Its has 3.7L 330HP engine seated nicely in a 3700lb car with 1/4 mile in the mid low 14 if your good at launching.

Please believe me I'm not trying to sound like an ass. But maybe, If you're 21 as your profile says and with the income level you have written... Maybe you should set your target a little lower on the price scale and divert your money into other expenses, like housing? Just an opinion.

I sold my 2005 STI last march for a 2007 BMW 335i. 5 Months later I sold the BMW 335i for a 2006 STI. The 335i was a sexy car especially when it was in the shop 6-7 times in the 5 months I owned it. Check engine lights, sensor going crazy. Needless to say I sold it and am super happy to be back in an STI. I'm now waiting for my 08 STI to show up. It's a shame to say that this single experience with BMW has basically thrown me off of ever owning a German vehicle again (unless I go Porsche). And it sucks cause I like alot of the German vehicles, they make some of the nicest looking cars. But when it comes down to me being able to drive my STI as hard as I want and never having a problem with it, make sme an STI/Subaru owner for life.

Just my 2 cents, but I test drove the 335i before buying the STi. I did not consider the Infiniti.

1. The 335i was 15K more after taxes.
2. No AWD plus 300 hp. There are rumors, but no actual car. At least that's what the BMW salesman told me.
3. No manual transmission.
4. Nice car but its not a sports car.

I came to the STi from the Outback 2.5XT with the same engine. So I don't see the problem with usable power in the STi. For everyday driving, it pulls very nicely from 3,000 rpm, just like the Outback. The turbo really kicks in just below 3000.

With German cars, it's not so much the frequency of service, it's the cost of any service that is not free scheduled maintenance. Subaru service is costly enough. The cost of servicing German cars (even Volkswagons) is beyond the pale.

Guess I do to. The M Coupe had the S54. If I had a tow hitch I would bet that car could pull tree stumps out of the ground

Someone asked whats the advantage of the inline 6. It puts more weight behind the front wheels. That is why BMW's are generally more balanced than other 6 cyclinder cars.

Another point regarding some of these cars that hasn't been mentioned yet is pedal placement. The STi has done a great job positioning the wheel to the pedals and seat. On many cars the wheel is too far away. I guess that is part of the 'luxury' experience.

Also I am really enjoying heel toe in the STi. It is the best pedal placement I have had. In the BMW I had to use my heel to brake because of the height and space between the pedals. With the STi I can keep my heel planted and roll my foot which for me makes for much smoother braking.
