Default HP between evo and STI

I have noticed that the evos seem to make as much as 377whp with no tuning. STI's with tuning make around 280whp. I know it also depends on elevation and what dyno its run on. I was under the impression that 07 STI's responded better to mods untuned than previous years and with bigger turbo and avcs on exhaust cams on the 08 STI I thought we would see more serious numbers out of the 08's. Are evo guys fudging numbers or not adjusting dyno factors or is it that hot of a 2.0L. I know the evo's final drive is 4.9 and the STI is 3.9 that is how the evo adjusts for weight and less displacement, but I thought the STI was really going to trump the evo in all catigories including handling.

377 whp no tuning? Oh come on. I can blow away most Evo's with mods, vs my little mods and Ecutek tune.

AMS and others get out a ton of power with just bolt ons. I really would love to max out my turbo with everything I can including cams. Then run the blouch dom 1 or dom 3. I would love to see 385-400whp and 400+lbft of torque to the wheels.

AMS said that they built a downpipe for it and got zero gains out of it. The stock one flows great. As for the subie vs evo...... evo's always pulled more horsepower out of the stock turbos. Also I think the evo x now comes with variable exhaust cam's too.

Horsepower, shmorsepower...doesn't the STI pull on the EVO X in every test (one of the few areas where the STI trumps the EVO X)...not that I really care since my street racing days are over...they never really started but you get the idea. Besides, when we're talking horsepower, we're talking top speed...and living in L.A. I'm lucky to hit the speed limit.

i'd also like to see a subjective comparison, apples to apples so to speak.

from what i have read the base dyno pulls are not that far apart with the subie generating more torque

If I remember correctly the Evo X clutch is crap. There sst trany is horribly designed for making an extra buck. But despite those set backs more R&D has been done on the evo than the 08 sti. Soon the sti will hit those numbers.

AMS had in article regarding an 04 sti they tuned. After putting on cai,new turbo manifold/uppipe and turboback exhaust. They put down 328hp and 400tq on a 21psi spike tappering down. AMS actually stated that it would take an evo 8 with full bolt ons, cams and upgraded FMIC to get that horsepower. Unfortunately it would never make that kind of torque. They also said after that, "You be the judge on which is better STI or EVO". For AMS to make such a statement was freaking great. The cost to upgrade our cams does not negate the hp gain. But if it was easier we would see gains higher than a evo can produce.

Let's see the source saying and proving an evo made 377whp with bolt onas (and no tune). I've never herd of such a thing. Bolt on's don't do crap for you're car unless its tunned. Lets see the dyno sheet!

I have never seen 377whp out of an untuned Evo X either. I know the Evo X is making more power with bolt ons and a tune but the STI trumps it in torque. Where the Evo is making 320wtq the STI is near 370-380wtq. The Evo X does seem to be able to sustain the power in the upper RPMs a bit better than the STI though, which is likely a turbo issue again.

I think the handling differences are likely highly overrated. I guess I'll find out when I do some lapping days (and I won't be on stock tires or with crappy stock camber.)

I saw a vid on the net with the same pro driver at a track drive faster and prefer the STI more than the evo.

There are several tuners getting a lot of power from just a few bolt-ons with the Evo X. AMS, Buschur, ATP, Works and Turbo Trix have all been seeing impressive gains with no tuning available. Vishnu has been tuning with his Procede and he is impressed. He makes his comparisons to the 335i.

The clutch in the 5spd has never been that good in the Evo. I still have my stocker in my Evo IX and it does okay. On my Evo VIII, it only last 17k miles. My 04 STI had a much better designed transmission.

Until real tuners actually start testing the SST tranny, I wouldn't dog it. It had problems, but we really don't know what it can handle yet. I am sure, someone will find a way to make it stronger. Look at HPAs 2008 R32 TT with DSG.

When I get back, I am definitely driving both cars before I make a purchase decision.

[Offtopic]BTW thanks for the service for all of us. I may not agree with the reasons of the war but obviously want all the best for our soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It's tough leaving my wife & kid every morning, can't imagine what you guys and gals are going through. Thanks again.[/Offtopic]
