Default 1st to 2nd shift..sucks! Upgrade pulley?

Does anyone else find the shift from 1st to 2nd annoying? Let me preface this by saying I consider myself an expert shifter! I am proficient at heel-toe and rev matching; its not a user-error thing I'm describing.

It seems like the RPMs just want to hang, so I have to wait a bit longer than normal for the 1-2 shift. I dont think its defective or anything, just inquiring if there is some solution I dont know about. I was wondering if a lighter flywheel would help this - less rotational mass and all might help it lose momentum faster?!?

BTW, has anyone reported bearing (or other) issues with the COBB Pulley's listed above? Is this a safe upgrade?

i have not noticed anything like that at all. then again, i only drove on the stock ecu mapping for a day or two.

i have had three different lightweight pulleys on my '04 (the cobb one was on for the better half of 2007). didn't do any harm or damage that i'm aware off. it ran *very* strong when it got pro-tuned mid 2007.

I haven't noticed that on mine, but what you describe sounds like it is a function of the ECU, not the flywheel to me. It's a common complaint on drive-by-wire cars.

i know exactly what ur talking about ... like the shift from 2nd to 3rd, you can do as fast as u want but from 1st to 2nd you got to give the car an extra second to make the shift a little smoother right... ugh i hate that ... yea i think the flywheel might help i dont know about the pulley though...

Did you own a previous generation STI? This is a common thing for STIs and it takes a split second delay to balance the mixture properly. I haven't driven an 08 yet, but on my 06, it became second nature after some practice.

From what I've read, the throttle float between shifts is programed into the stock tune for emissions purposes; the cars run cleaner at higher rpm, so they don't let it drop between shifts.

Many stock cars have this problem, some more so than others. I heard that the first year of the new Honda Si had it pretty bad... there were so many complaints that I think Honda released an ECU update.

Never noticed it. You have an AP dont you? Maybe its a tuning issue?

If anything, I take my time as to make the synchros last and the revs drop pretty quick.

If you are really good at driving you can shift (while moving) without a clutch, try more throttle control, or double clutch. To show off I can from 1-6 with out a clutch. try it is all about throttle control.

how did you practice?... just shift without using the clutch?... thought that doesnt work anymore on modern cars?... last time i tried i got gear grinding...

No problem with mine at all. Or maybe I've adjusted to it. My previous car was a DWB 06 WRX.

I also agree with the OP and I am slightly annoyed by the same thing. I can add that a pulley isnt going to change that. I have the Cobb pulley and it is still the same.

The problem is that first is must shorter than 2nd. Rather than 2nd to 3rd.

It can be annoying, but not to the point that I am going to do anything about it.

you will get used to it after a short time... its also better for street driving because you dont have to shift fast from first to second ... thats just me
