+1

can be fixed with some tuning if you tell your tuner about it.

Many stock cars have this problem, some more so than others. I heard that the first year of the new Honda Si had it pretty bad... there were so many complaints that I think Honda released an ECU update.
Exactly!
Many cars have this to pass emissions and the ECU does this when you chop out of the throttle, just as you do when shifting. The pulleys and flywheel wont really help this much, its a programming thing.

If you look on the V8 S4 forums they have a problem with the RPM dropping to quick it is because the internals are really light to save weight to most of the accessories are driven off the timing chain that is why if you ask hear the the new ver of the 4.2 rev up they sound like they have a super charger that is how they more HP so you have to just left the throttle a little when you shift. That is really tricky

Coming from an MX-5, I'm just so blown away by the power, I hadn't realized. Is this something common to all cars then or is this a Subie thing? I wonder how much this affects 0-60 or 1/4 mile times?

Like I said, I'm not complaining. Given the power from the factory and the extra power extracted by the kind folks at Cobb, I'm as happy as [insert quaint saying].

heh... its a highly debatable topic whether a lightweight pulley throws CEL or not... some say stock is heavier since its a harmonic balancer some say subaru claims that the flat-4 balances itself... but either way some ppl have seen CELs after installing pulley and some dont... some swear it makes their cars faster and some dont feel a thing...
CEL from pulley and exhaust? - Transmission (AT/MT) & Driveline - NASIOC
Perrin Crank Pulley...worth it? [Archive] - NASIOC
different pulleys, different CEL's? [Archive] - NASIOC

and lots other threads. the CEL is more common on the wrx i think though.

Don't own an STI yet but in my Mazdaspeed 6 I have the same 1-2 shift problem. My first gear is extremely short and I often find myself hitting 3-4k. If I don't wait that extra second on shifting to second the car shakes. 2-6 I can shift smooth and fast since the gear ratios seem to be much better between them. Or its the stupid drive by wire; threw me off gaurd when I put it on cruise control for the first time and the pedal moved back to its normal position.

run it up to 4k rpms, let off gas, apply light pressure towards 4th. you will feel it pop into neutral then into gear around 3k. apply gas and continue. works the same in every gear once you get good at it and it really isnt hard at all.

This is a stock mapping issue. I had the same problem on my 2007. Once i flashed with gabedude's stage 1 maps, this issue no longer existed.
