Default Exhaust System In the Future?

Hello Gentlemen,
I'm a Subaru noob. I've almost got 1K miles on my 08' and I can't wait to really push her. I'm wondering about upcoming exhaust systems. I've seen the dual pipe Perrin and I've watched the vid clip on youtube. For me, I think it's a bit too loud.

Do you guys think there will be a good selection of systems in the near future? I would like to keep the quad exits, yet I would like something slightly more muscular, without attracting the attention of everyone on the street. Also, what kind of performance, mileage gains can we expect, if any?

Thanks for the noob info

most performance and mpg gains come from the tune and not the exhaust itself... search and see what ppl do for stage 2 on this forum.

Welcome! Every exhaust company who makes them for Subaru will most likely be coming out with exhausts for the new '08. SPT (Subaru Performance Tuning) has a few in the works, read it in a magazine not too long ago. Cat-backs usually yield very little gains, if any.

juggernaut: i've read a bit about stage 2, but alot of the info is over my head and frankly i'm worried about what it can do to the motor. I need to spend more time reading.

for now, I know that exhaust is safe and easy and makes a nice sound

Stage 2 is safe, MANY people run it on this site. The gains are very good. You can also go to stage 1 with an accessport, and gain a little, and all you need is stock equipment on the car.

catback exhausts typically net you very little gain in power. Usually 5 hp or less. The gains are made from the downpipe (the pipe going from the turbo to the catback) and in a quality tune. I would consider starting with a downipipe and a tune for the sake of gaining power safely and possibly increasing the sound just a tad.

If you want a quiet catback just wait though - there are companies that have made fairly stock looking catbacks that are fairly quiet for all model years up until the 08. I would expect them to have an 08 version out shortly.

in terms of engine safety, I think you may want to research Cobb Stage 1 since there seems to be some issues with the STOCK tune.

if you're not interested in adding power but instead want more of a growl and better (different?) looks, then a catback is the way to go. I can tell you that Dan Harman (at Harman Motive) indicated that they are weeks away from releasing their catback...and it looked and sounded amazing. A bit too loud for my needs (this is our primary family hauler....and I do mean HAUL!) but if you want a sportier sound, then I would highly recommend.

exactly, just sit tight, wait, and enjoy your car while all these companies design their new exhausts. it's the start of a new model, it's going to take a little while. but before you know it, there's going to be so many that you won't know which one to pick

if you dont want too loud, but want to enhance the rumble, look into a cobb or APS exhaust.

i love invidia, but they tend to be on the loud side.

a good mix would maybee be a perrin dual tube! lots of info around on all these.

dont know what will be avail. for the 08, but give it some time

in summary, stage 2 is very safe given that its tuned by a good tuner. i would recommend a catted downpipe along with the catback you are getting, then catless uppipe to reduce turbo lag (helps A LOT but installation is a pain, get it professionally installed if u can. it can reduce the lag by like 500+ rpm). if you are looking for more power on top end (~5k+ rpm), get headers... but they are pretty expensive... only if you are hardcore and looking for a flatter torque curve.

for DP, go with bellmouth.... not sure what the safe limit is for boost but your tuner should know... there shouldnt be boost creep problems.

I remember looking at some videos of Harmon Motives oemish looking exhaust. They were resonated and nonresonated clips.

They sound nice!

wow, thanks for all the help everyone.

i don't think I want that much more power for now, as I'm pretty happy with it, but I will wait to see what systems come along as far at catback exhaust.

again, thanks
