Oh, I've got plenty of weird noises, but most of them are mechanical and I've been able to identify them.

Good to see that after a complete redesign of the back end they kept the really cool diff clunk when you launch the car

Yeah, my '05 did it too. Normal (the hood that is.) As far as noises, my '08 is a lot quieter than my '05. It still makes some standard STi noises (tranny, brakes, diffs, etc) but overall a much better ride. And it handles better to top it off!

Speaking of noise, my STI on cold startup sounds very loud at idle. I don't recall my '05 being THAT loud but I know there are a couple additional environmental components that my '05 didn't have. Is it normal, on cold startup, for the '08 to make a relatively loud whirring noise? Believe me, I'm comfortable and totally familiar with the boxer ticking and clacking, but this noise sounds different. Normally it wouldn't bug me, but with that stop sale order, I'm a tiny bit paranoid.

Another thing: I actually find my '08 to be rather growly at 2-3K RPM. As soon as I hit 3K it turns into the normal boxer growl, but below that it sounds a bit more metallic/raspy. Once again, it's probably just me being paranoid but it reminds me of my '05 with Cusco mounts, but without the vibration.

As for the hood, mine doesn't move that much at all. But I haven't done any highway driving yet (just a few bursts up to a little over highway speeds.) My '05 hood lifted noticeably at speed.

By the way, according to Subaru of Canada, the STI hood is still an "aluminum alloy" and still feels very light (even with the hood struts.)

It seems like the rubber stops that the hood sits on are very soft, allowing the hood to bounce up and down even while latched.

I'd say not normal -- I've never seen any vibration or movement of the hood on my '06 except on the track, and then only at 100+ mph. IMO check the adjustment on the hood to make sure it's resting firmly against the bumpstops when closed.

Mine does not viberate a (unknown measure here), but it does vibrate a little.
By the way, please do not start any more threads of little things that if not for the threads, we would have never noticed them (rear view mirror to low, hood viberating, etc).

You mean like that loud clunk when pulling out of reverse into first in the morning? or the brake grind?

just FYI, the '08 hood is STEEL.

Whirring at startup is probably that air pump which was implemented to reduce cold start emissions

That's kind of what I figured (was hoping).
