Talking A Little Dilema

Hello All,

My name is Bryan and I have been a fan of the STI since it fist came to the states. My favorite model year was the 04-05 design like most. So here is the issue, yesterday when stopping by Donaldson's Subaru to check on the delivery dates for the 08 STIs. I discovered a 2004 WRB STI with gold BBSs.(My exact choice for color and wheels) The Mileage is 23k. The body is MINT. The Price is 24K. The 08 has grown on me, but this is THE car, the reason i fell in love with the STI. What should I do? Just want to see what the thoughts of the "Brotherhood" was.

I would say it depends on your budget and what you really want. You should be 100% honest with yourself as to what you really want in the car. If the 04/05 body style is what you want then go for it.

Try to look up some history on the car before buying though. Carfax and any info the dealer might be able to give you. Id have a mechanic look at it too.

If everything checks out, then hop on it! The way I look at it, you will never be happy with a car you didnt want 100%.

Have the '04 pre-purchased inspected to make sure it's as mint as you think it is. If it checks out, get the '04.

Offer them low 20K for it and go for it. You know the only gave the guy who traded it 17-18K. I think you can get it for 21K. Good luck.

BTW WRB with Gold BBS is SICK! And thats coming from a guy with a gray/silver STi.

An STi is an STi. And saving $10k+ is... not bad at all!

If you can't get them down a few thousand more, and your mechanic gives it a clean bill of health (compression test, maybe send the oil off for testing) I'd say go for it.

Heck, with the money you save, if you don't plan on modding, pick could up an extended warranty for that added piece of mind. In fact, offering to purchase an extended warranty should improve your negotiating ability, since the dealer stands to make a few dollars on that as well (be sure to haggle the warranty price, since dealerships seem to start at 200% of their cost on extended warranties).

PS - I would say drive an 08 STI and Evo X first, but even if you really like one or both, I'd still say get the used STI anyway. Drive it for a few years until the Evo X or new STi come down in price. Nothing says you can't trade in down the road. Best of luck!

i think you just answered your own question...the 04-05 models is what caught your eye and what youve comed to love...plus for that year and the mileage you really do have a good deal...not only that...you said that wrb is your choice of color...so stick to it...personally i wouldnt get the new evo...but if you got the paper to buy a new sti or evo by all means do what you do...but thats just my .02

I would just put the extra 10k into a brand new car. You never know how the car was driven for the 23k miles. For 10k, you have the added security of a brand new car and you get to break it in on your terms.

Plus you'd have a much longer warranty.

I say wait a couple more months and see what people say when the've had both the new STI and Evo X for a couple months.
