Evo vs STi escalation: "STi's suck!! If you had an Evo you could put the dogs in the trunk and wouldn't have to hear them if they barked due to the cabin being closed off from the trunk".

road and track is bias towards evo, everyone knows that. ive seen a couple vids thus far where the 08 evo flops against the 08 sti. still not too fond of the 08 sti though, the hatch just doesnt go well with me.

IIRC only the JDM STI seems to have a noticeable advantage over the Evo. In the USDM it looks like the Evo is doing quite respectably.

I probably deserved most of the stuff you said to me.

I dunno go check out the thread in the off topic forum... "2 Evo MR's almost got me killed...WTF"

Guy says he has no respect for Evo drivers and just about everyone in the thread starts talking crap about Evo drivers. I can understand the OP saying that since he was probably really pissed off when he wrote that. Now I do see this kind of crap on the Evo forums and I post the same thing I did in that thread as I did in that off topic thread on here.

Come on now...

Yeah the JDM STI was embarrassing every car on the best motoring vids.

But like most cars the USDM STI seems to be dumbed down a lot compared to the JDM STI. This is just from what I've seen though.

very true indeed,so i guess we really cant compare the 2 unless they compete in their own venues,or in other words countries.

oh well, like it matters anyways because both the new sti and evo are still getting owned by the older versions with the Evo9 topping them all from what ive seen.

So what changed from the JDM to US? We know for sure the tires. Then there are talks that the shocks are more of a econo than the true performers on the jdm one. The alignment is also said to be more aggressive on JDM. All of these are fixable, but why did it have to be nerfed? Oh wait, the steering rack...

I don't know, the evo9 did not do so well in the BM video.

Indeed the JDM STI looks faster then the Evo IX, but keep in mind this is the JDM STI not the USDM STI.

I was scared for the Evo IX when I saw the JDM STI pull on it on the straight away. lol

There's practically no difference between JDM EVO IX and the USDM EVO IX.

JDM 2.0 = Less displacement but Higher REV limit
US 2.5 = More Displacement and Lower Rev limit

ALL ELSE IS NOMINAL

Not sure how much of a difference it would make from the JDM gear ratio to the US. If the torque output is the same, the close ratio of the JDM one should be better. But with a good tune that utilizes the 0.5 extra displacement...

I test drove an '08 STi today (with intention to buy) and, unfortunately, came away a bit disappointed.

First off, let me say this.. these are my personal observations and I don't wish to ruffle any feathers or insult anyone who owns an '08 STi.

The good:

It looks great (silver car), both the interior and exterior. It's a sharp car. The interior is roomy, with good cargo room, too. It rides well and corners well, though it does roll a bit.

The not so good:

It didn't feel very quick to me... not like 305hp/290ft.lbs. should in a 3350 pound car. Also, the power delivery was not very exciting. I know Subaru tuned for a linear power delivery, but there is too little 'coming-up-on-boost' turbo rush. It accelerates almost like it's NA. What fun is a turbo car that doesn't lunge forward when you get on it?

The shifter was just ok. Though reasonably short, it felt a little delicate - nowhere near the robust, rifle bolt feel of an aftermarket short shift.

The stock exhaust is too tame. I could see using this exhaust for a WRX, but not the STi. It deserves a tougher sound.

Some may ask, "well, what did you expect?" I've driven the EVO IX and the '07 STI. The EVO felt very quick and fun. When I hit it, it came up on boost and shot forward (I know it's a light tin can). The '07 STI had a more linear power delivery than the EVO and it didn't seem as quick, but still felt powerful. I have not driven the EVO X, so I cannot comment on it.

Maybe I drove a lemon. It's a shame because I was prepared to buy the car today.

I did have it in s#, that sharpened the throttle response, but that's all.

I think the combination of longer gears and the SI drive settings comes as a shock to many "old" STI drivers. I would have preferred shorter gearing (04-06) in the 08, but I think the main reason it feels unexciting is due to the smoother power delivery. I've never driven an 07 so the gearing in the 08 felt pretty damn tall. I also wasn't flooring it or going above 4-4.5K, so I'm sure there is more to wring out of it. Even though I swore I'd focus on suspension first this time around, I think I might break down and go AP stg1 + Protune, just to fix the seemingly weird power delivery.

Also, are you in a state that only has 91 oct? That could really affect things too.
