Default Has anyone put on BIG tires yet?

It might be a little early for this thread, but who has stuck giant tires on their STIs? I'm talking 275s or better. Post your pics!

I'm taking delivery of my car next month and will be putting at least 275s on them, possibly 285/30-18s.

275s for daily use? That's a lot of tire!

There was a post on NASIOC about it. Either PDX or Perrin put 285+ tires on and they fit, though, iirc they stuck outside the fender ever-so-slightly, iirc.

Seriously though, why would you want a 275+ tire on the street? The profile you'll have to run will offer no protection from pot-holes, etc. Not to mention they'll probably be very annoying due to tramlining on crappy roads. It's not like you'll need that sort of grip on a public street.

Just my two cents.

Who said anything about these being street tires? They are going to be for AS autocross only, either a v710 or Hoosier a6.

^^If Perrin fit 285s, and they poked, that wouldn't work because they'd the suspension isn't stiff enough to keep the fender off the tire.

Sorry I just assumed you wanted them on the street because of the way you wrote your post. Haha.

I'll see if I can find the thread for you.

Ok then we should put bicycle tires on racecars. They'll be much faster

I think what he's getting at is the bigger the tire the heavier it is, thus the higher it's inertia. It will take more torque to get the larger wheel and tire rolling, and your car will accelerate slower.

Unless you have exceeded the grip of the stock size tire, there may not be any benefit to going larger.

The profile shouldn't matter a bit, the sidewall height won't change (assuming the OP chooses a size that maintains the stock diameter).

Shouldn't be a big deal, really, big tires don't behave badly just because they're big. I come from Mustangs, and many people run tires bigger than 275. The '03 Cobra even came with 275's stock front & rear.

That said, I don't know if I'd do it on an STI for daily driving, because the extra cost seems unnecessary. On the Mustang it was needed for traction. Not so much on the STI. AX is of course a whole 'nother matter...

For the haters who say the car will be slower...first of all the 285/30-18s are shorter than stock, so any weight difference will be offset by the gearing, plus I will have wheels much lighter than stocker, and lighter even than the BBS option.

And again, these will not be street driven tires (although I've done 275s before on a daily driver Subie )

The OP said these were for autocross. Wider is almost always better for this application. It's not like he's throwing wider tires on for the hell of it.
