Default PDX tune + 08 STI = :)

I bought my 08 on Dec 26th and pretty much loved everything about it. Having come out of a an 05 with a Perrin catless down pipe and PDX stage 2 map though, I was pretty disappointed in the power delivery. I bought the 05 new, but I just can't remember what it felt like stock in order to compare apples to apples. The other thing I was disappointed in was the fuel economy. Driven with heroic levels of throttle restraint, I drove into PDX with 19.8 mpg. The best I ever managed was 22. That is as indicated on the computer. Actual mileage was running about .5 under what was indicated. I had 1280 miles on the clock.

So I arrived on Saturday and start talking to Jarred about the car. A few minutes later I was sitting in the passenger seat of a PDX tuned stage 2 08 STI. A few minutes after that..."OMG!" That car is fast. It was making 355 lb-ft and felt great. The torque of this car was pretty impressive. It felt...well, fast. The traction control simply can't keep up with torque, and Jarred (awesome driver) gave me several demonstrations of second gear POWER induced tail-out slides--no flick of the wheel, no late braking, just POWER! DCCD set to auto. Awesome!

Anyway, that was all it took to sell me on stage 1. Stage 2 is in my future, but for now I am very, very happy.

Tim came in, and they got me on the dyno that afternoon. I actually had pretty good numbers stock. 266 ft-lb and 251 hp. After the tune it made 299/270. This is just a tune. On the same dyno my 05 (described above) made 302/280. The 08 is also making this torque earlier by about 300 rpm.

Driving the car is a totally new experience. Stepping into it used to be a debate...should I step on it/should I save some gas. It really just wasn't enough fun to justify burning the fuel. Now it is, "LET'S FUCxING GO!" Gas be damned; this is too much fun!

Now for the best bit of news. PDX did all this for free!! Not really. I paid for it, but I ended up getting 25 mpg on the way home, and this has been repeated on every commuting trip since. So I calculate that it will take me less than two years for the gas savings to pay for the tune and AP. Wow. The 25 mpg was with several WOT runs and then about 40 miles of pretty steady highway driving home.

I also basically got three boost maps. I asked for a conservative tune so the boost numbers were set accordingly. "S#" gives me 17 (I think). "S" gives me 1 less, and "I" runs stock boost. The difference at WOT is noticeable.

I couldn't be happier. Thank you PDX.

Thanks, MEX. You can call PDX and get them to send you an AP with their map right now...I think. It is well worth it.

Forgive me, but I'm brand new into looking at Subarus... so looking at the PDX website, Trevoro, you got the "PDX Tuning Secure Cobb AccessPORT Map Upgrade? Which would be $150???

www.rocketrally.com - Rocket Rally in Squamish. Not sure if they have developed maps for the 08 STi yet however.

Hey guys. I got the pro-tune for a great price. The off the shelf map is going to be great though. From what I understand, my car was used to help further refine it. My 05 had their off-the-shelf stage 2 map and was awesome (as fast as any pro-tuned stage 2 car I ever ran) so I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend ordering an AP from them with the upgraded map instead of getting a local pro-tune.

You should call PDX to get real answers though. All I really have to say is that I love what they did and have total confidence in their work.

Not so fast.
PDX maps are for 93 octane, low altitude, and humidity.
Unless you fall into that EXACT catagry I WOULD NOT RECOMEND RUNNING THAT MAP!
As that is all that there is map is ment for. If you run it at high altitude or a place that does not offer 93 the dynamic advance will start to pull timing.
Stick to OTS maps that cobb has, or get it localy tuned. As the OTS map will work in ALL areas, not just the ones for where the tuner is located.

Dont get me wrong, im sure PDX does great work. Its just not for everyone.
