I think it has to do with the oil breaking down because it is used to cool the turbo.

I used to run 5K intervals with Amsoil full synthetic. As of about 5K miles ago I switched to 2500 mile intervals using conventional Pennzoil.

Interesting that BMW recommends a 15,000 mile oil change interval, even on it hot-running twin turbo 335i. Since BMW pays for all service (including oil changes) for the first 4 yrs or 50,000 miles, and I believe it uses synthetic, that may be to save them money. On the other hand if such extended intervals were dangerous, BMW would also have to pay for any and all repairs (at least if before 50k miles).

it's the overall design tolerances involved with the creation of the engine that lets bmw "let" their motors go for a longer period without changing the oil.

The dealership told me it should be changed every 7,500 and the filter every 3,750. They always shake their head at me when I show up with 29XX to get it changed.

I checked on this though and it is recommended every 3,750 not 7,500 like the dealer continuously tells me.

I think it could be to cover there a$$$ in regards to warranty issues down the line.
Inherently turbos "spit" oil that collects in the intake and intercooler... a lot of people don't install oil catch cans, and alot dont check the oil levels at all. "Just bring her in when the service is due".

So, even tho the Oil is not spent at 3500, the levels could get dangerously low.

This is why I would never keep a BMW past 100k miles if the owner followed the "recommended 15k oil intervals".

My dad mechanic and owns a BMW/Mercedes shop. Been in business for 20 years and he has seen sooooo many bmw's come doing with sluge problems. He opens up the valve cover and there is sluge everywhere. To bad I dont have the pics anymore. He couldnt even take out the oil filer out of the canister because it was caked in sludge. He had to cut the oil filter in pieces to get it out.

Of course 15k intervals are fine up until you hit 50k+ or so miles. This is when BMW's warranty is over and they want your $$$ to fix the issue.

Size means nothing, you need to compare filter area. The stock filter has more area than nearly every other filter out there. Some are even a joke because they have so little filter in there.

Ive got 70,000mi on my STi...the majority of those Stage 2+. I change my oil regulary with regular old dino oil. Subi's like dino oil...no real need for synthetic unless you drive in very harsh conditions...JMO though.

You do that then. I have my oil analyzed by a lab on every car I own so I'm not wasting time, money, and energy changing oil and filters when it doesn't need to be changed. These threads are always the same on any enthusiast site (car/bike). A bunch of people say I do this or I do that, with no real data to back up any of it. Real data is having the lab analyze your oil. You do it a couple of times and you figure out when it needs to be changed rather than hunches.
