I can imagine. I actually know the dealership, I lived in Williamsburg for 3 years. Went through London quite often.

I got my '05 for $300 under invoice, so it is possible. I got a quote from fitzmall.com and asked all the dealerships in my area if they would match it. All of them said no at first so I waited. A month later one of them e-mailed me out of the blue asking if I was still interested, and that they would match the price. If you find a sales guy who needs to meet his quota, he will give you the car for whatever you ask.

I strongly believe that the 08's will sell for less than invoice as well. As far as I have heard the 08' wrx is not selling well around here. Every 6th car up here in new england is some sort of subaru but I have yet to see a single 08 on the street!

Once the small group of STI fans buy the first ones, demand will drop and so will the price.

Getting an excellent price (buyer's perspective) you have to have patience. And if you do, then you will get a good price. The problem today is everyone wants everything right now, they have little or no patience to wait for what they want, they want it yesterday. I can't count how many times I've walked into the dealership (after making inet/phone contact prior to my visit) wanting to buy a car, only to leave due to not getting the price I want. A few days later I get a follow up call where I stick to my price. They give up for the time being. A week or two passes, maybe a month, and they are calling again. Eventually, via patience, they wear down, need to make a sell, and cave. It might be the end of the month, or just a week of solid rain, and bam. The most leverage is at the end of the sales year.
When buying a car, make a decision on what you are going to pay prior to making any contact with any dealer. Due to market demands this might have to have some fluctuation. Invoice, + a $100 or $200 is as much as I would ever pay for a new car. Typically I buy at invoice. If I can get them below invoice, they is just icing on the cake. I plan on buying an '08, and they haven't arrived locally yet so I have some more waiting to do

Yeah, we put the finishing touches on a new building last june. Sales are up a tad, but the facility is excellent. Best looking place prob this side of Knoxville and Lexington easy...well except Falls Ford....but thats a 8 million dollar site!!!!

They can certainly be had at invoice. I pre-ordered mine on Dec 23rd at invoice with little problem. There aren't even any cars on the east coast to meet the demand yet and it still wasn't a problem getting it for that price.

I ordered mine for $300 over invoice. I still think it isn't a bad deal.

The dealer I stopped by said MSRP on the first batch (I think it's a fairly new dealer). He said they could offer it for $500 over invoice come March-April.

Once we come to a financial agreement, I would then go get the car for you, or wait until it arrives. Ordering a car is a little more difficult than people imagine. Us as car salesmen are not looking at what is being built, or what is coming for you. You guys are fairly brutal on the 500 under invoice. Granted, the holdback goes to the dealership, but being unrealistic is kinda funny. But in the grand scheme of things, a internet sale is 99% a invoice sale to move a unit. It's the lot traffic or repete business that drives the money.
Its good to hear from some sales people and get there perspective...
That being said, I would hope that if a customer emailed you, several times, and flat out offered you a price over invoice, and even said to you "take it to your manager" That you would would do exactly that. TAKE THE OFFER TO THE MGR> Then, give the person making the offer a YES or NO, or atleast a counter offer! Buy insisting that a customer come in and sit down, and waste a whole DAY haggling over price, you are loosing potential sales. (Period)
Oh, and I am a Repeat Customer....

I have gotten quotes of invoice or better this week alone from ININITI, HUMMER, and SABB! All with OUT THE DOOR offers!

and to put things into perspective....

SOA first contacted me about the PRE ORDER. I signed up for the preorder, the dealerships responded... But when it came down to a QUOTE they stalled... doing just what you said>>>

TRYING TO BAIT ME INTO THE SHOWROOM, To GET ME Anxious, to go over to the "Sales Office" and let the clock tick, and hide, behind the Sale Manager. then Massage the numbers of my trade, or the "Dealer Fees" or some other BS, then when I am so sick of sitting there that I will pay 500 extra dollars just to get out of there, that I just give in!!!!

Suckers are borne everyday, but I "Aint one of'em"!

TO put things into a more clear perspective, we are talking about someone ready to shell out 40k on a car that he has never driven or even seen! they should be happy to take a deposit and move a unit!!! what if I get there when they arrive and decide my Legacy is way better for me?
I mean Not to bash the STI, but there are positives and negatives for every car! and we are talking about 40,000 for a little souped up econo-car... No full leather, no heated seats, no electric seats, no dual zone climate control, No sunroof...and for a FIRST YEAR MODEL! (Bugs to work out)
I guess thats about all the drawbacks I can think of...lol

Assuming most of my post went unread...................... the above unfortunately comes with the territory when purchasing a car.

Just like 'Pre' said, you have to have patience.

My play has always been, via email "Well I'd like to buy it from your dealer because you are local and friendly, but <insert dealer name from 100 miles away> quoted me <insert ridiculous price>. I'd like to get it from your dealership but if I can save a few hundred bucks by driving a few hours out of my way I'll do it."

The reply I got was "What color do you want"

Some customers are more demanding than others. Some spend 40 grand, some spend 400 grand. When we get a GT-R, I will try and sell it on the web, net, phone ect. I definately will treat who is looking at it just as nice as I would someone wanting a 6 speed base versa.

As for someone wanting to shell out 40 grand for a car...sometimes the car bring with it a certain type of customer. Many jacks in the business give the average car buyer fits, and a bad feeling about buying a car. My look at it is if the customer is pleased, regardless if it is a 6# deal, or dipping into holdback, the customer is my top priority. Being on the phone is different than being in the showroom with cash or showing intrest.

Why should being on the phone with credit card in hand be any different from walking in? I like to do my negotiations via email or phone because I'm much too important to spend hours on end in the dealership.

Hahahaaa... well not that we are "to important"... My time is important to me, but more that I want to get the best deal, and the best way I have found in the past few years is to deal through the Internet dept. first.. Get an OTD quote, and only go into the dealership when its time to sign and accept delivery. If the price is settled this shouldn't take much time at all.

The problem now seems to be, the dealerships are reluctant to give quotes online, in hopes that once the buyer gets to the showroom the temptation/pressure is to great that the buyer ends up paying more!

As far s being demanding... When you are the customer, the person spending money, you are in the position to demand what you want (Period)
Supply and demand! If you cant get what you want with one dealer or BRAND(make), go elsewhere! The way I look at it is you either DEMAND a good deal or BEND OVER.

That being said, Yesterday, I emaild the one dealer that said my STiwas ordered, but didn't take a deposit....
I let him know, not as a threat, that I was in contact with SOA, and that they are expecting an update on how my buying experience was going....

He responded rite away with an Order number! and said he would let his GM know...

Supply and demand!
I think right now the concept of supply/demand works in favor of the sellers since demand is great and supplies are relatively low. That's why they can sell for MSRP or over. In a few months, when the initial hub-bub decreases, leverage will tip towards the buyers. Can you wait a few months? If so you might be able to get one for below invoice.
