Not difficult. Hold out until they show you the invoice, then tell them you'll pay $500 under, sign and drive today. Done deal.

Ok, well maybe I understated that a little bit. But it's done quite often.

or the dealer will tell you to take a hike, because i have never met a dealer including the one that my family has purchased 20+ cars from will sell a car for invoice or under unless they really really need to unload it...

as far as i can tell no dealer will ever have to unload an STI for under invoice. the only way i could see this happening is if subaru offered some sort of incentive from the factory...

im sorry to break you the news but if i a dealer is selling you a car for "under invoice" it is not the true invoice cost it is an inflated one.

3. Getting a quoted price over the phone is a "No-No" to the saleman, do to all the competition. (That's why they only take those that show up at the dealership serious)
4. Most of which are folks/kids just wanting to test drive to say they've done so or can't afford to buy.

So taking someone serious over the phone is very difficult.

I'm sure those make sense to those who have been in the sales industry.

On the other hand, their salesman should have done a better job of following up.
Well, I wrote (Email = In writing) them and "offered them" 800 over invoice.
Not only did I state that I was ready to leave a deposit and preorder, but I already own a Subaru that I get serviced at one of the dealerships and BOUGHT from the other! So they should treat me like a valued customer... not some punk> I didn't even ask to test drive. Makes me want to head over to Infiniti...lol

Dear Clifton ,

Welcome to Palm Beach Automall and our state-of-the-art Online Buying
Program. My name is Mario Jaramillo , I can be reached at (561)
676-@#$% and I have been assigned to guide you through this process.
No matter where you are on the road to owning a Subaru Impreza. I am
dedicated to making your purchase experience faster, better, and MUCH
easier.

To help me better serve you, please identify where you are in your
buying process and what specific information you would like to receive
from me. I have found that customers normally fall into one of these
categories.

1. They know exactly what car they want, have identified every
specification they are looking for and would love to drive that exact
vehicle home today.

2. They have narrowed down their choices to a couple of vehicles, are
pretty sure which options they want and will be making a purchase
within the next 7 to 10 days.

3. They are just beginning their research, know the general type of
vehicle they want to own and will probably buy a new vehicle with the
next three months.

4. Want a new vehicle but have no idea which one

As I said before, no matter where you are in this process I will
provide you with the exact information you are looking for including
an up-front, no-haggle price. If you do not reply to this email I will
assume you fall into the first category and provide you with our best
price on the exact vehicle you designed.

Thank you for this opportunity to earn your business!

Best regards,

Sincerely,

Hey Katrina,

Any word on the '08 STI?
(option code 8LY-KP) Color code: SSK Silver
If we pre-order Sunday, will they give us a definite arrival date?

Sunday is still looking good for us to come leave you a refundable deposit.
Only thing is Im waiting to get my LGT back from Moby's.

Lets Get some of the business out of the way so Sunday is not an all
day event… \
Ill try to make you work sheet as easy as possible…. lol

Fist thing: My '05LGT lmtd has been maintained by Mike and the guys
over there at Bird Rd., so you should already have record that it has
been properly maintained, including New Clutch, New ECU, new
Injectors, New Breaks, New Battery, all under SOA warranty. Also, I
just put on a set of the best-rated Falcon tires two months ago.
The car has had a fender bender witch cost less than 1600.00 to
repair, indicating no frame damage. The claim was handled through
progressive's claims, work being done at Moby's, and guarantee for
life. It's in excellent shape. This car will sell for $$$ later as a
"certified" used, I am sure!

The Pay off amount as of today $17,076.00 I won't take a penny less as
a trade in. (in writing)
I have two other dealers who have agreed to this already.

Second,
$39,440 Msrp. (that's 2258 over!)

$36,537 Invoice + Dest $645
= $37,182

I offer:
$38,000 ($818 over)
plus TT&L
(No extra bs charges, like paint protection, or stocking fee or
anything..."deal breakers")

$38,000
Plus TT&L.
I am pretty firm on these terms. \

Reading through the emails I get a sense of urgency from you, which makes you a sitting duck. I also get the feeling that you would be a demanding customer. Considering the general public's excitement for the new STI, could the dealership be trying to string you along, hoping someone "easy" comes and picks up the car in the meantime? They don't want to blow you off completely but would rather deal with someone less demanding?

Note taken.
But in todays slowing economy, wouldn't it be smarter of them to SELL another unit, from a customer that is obviously serious about the purchase and not just kicking tires? NO, The problem is, that they are so use to sticking it to people, that it throws them for loop when they get an avid buyer, who is in control of his possible spediture/

The urgency was because of the Ipod promotion, which I lost because of the dealers dragging there feet, and because when I make a BONIFIDE OFFER on something it is not gonna be offered indefinatly... NO, instead, I go buy from there compitition....
What you dont see in the emails is the phone calls... where I am handed lines of BS...

While I agree with you on the sense of urgency from DJ, they (dealership) isn't going to sit on a car if they have a buyer. A less demanding customer? All the customers that come through the dealership are demanding and presume that the salesman is going to dick them around (this is true only if you, the customer, let them).

The other thing, DJ, is that the dealership will never commit to a trade-in amount without seeing the vehicle. You would most likely not pay $17,??? for a car just on some strangers word, sight unseen.

The responses that you got from the dealerships are pretty much cookie cutter replies, but again, the internet managers are sifting through anywhere between 50-200 emails each day on their cars. Each customer just as demanding as you are with the customer service. While you are most likely farther along in the process, mentally ready to purchase the car and ready to put down a deposit, the Internet sales manager still has a protocol he has to follow to appease his employer.

I'm not taking the dealerships side on this, just trying to inform those who haven't been on that side of what goes on. The salesman needs to do just a little bit more work on his end and send a more personal email.

Getting more detailed information to the salesman should speed things along.
~Make sure you have an approved loan from your bank so that you are assured the best available APR% that way they have something to shoot for and if they beat it, you win both ways.
~Also, tell him how much cash you are going to put down, if any.
~And you've already stated that if they pay off your trade, you'll buy. (They will need to do a trade appraisal to confirm value, so make an appointment to fit your schedule) To me, as a salesman, that's a no brainer sale and would tally another mark next to my name on the board in the sales office.

Good luck with this purchase.

Believe it or not, I purchased my '06 STi in January of '06 (having been out since Sept or Oct '05) for $500 below invoice. When the invoice is printed out (on any vehicle), there are what's called "hold-back" (which won't be itemized on the invoice) which is about 2-5% of invoice price which is what the dealership won't negotiate, in most cases. Invoice is typically between 5-10% less than MSRP. Some dealerships even start with a second sticker and negotiate from there.

I am in car sales, and usually lead the board every month. If I up'ed you on the lot, took a phone call, email ect, I would ask you to come sit down, find out what you want, and then work on the price. Once we come to a financial agreement, I would then go get the car for you, or wait until it arrives. Ordering a car is a little more difficult than people imagine. Us as car salesmen are not looking at what is being built, or what is coming for you. You guys are fairly brutal on the 500 under invoice. Granted, the holdback goes to the dealership, but being unrealistic is kinda funny. But in the grand scheme of things, a internet sale is 99% a invoice sale to move a unit. It's the lot traffic or repete business that drives the money.

not at all... as other have said STIs can and do sell for less than invoice... Mine did... There is not a broad audience for this car, and there were plenty at the dealer that they wanted off the lot the day I came to buy.

I strongly believe that the 08's will sell for less than invoice as well. As far as I have heard the 08' wrx is not selling well around here. Every 6th car up here in new england is some sort of subaru but I have yet to see a single 08 on the street!

Once the small group of STI fans buy the first ones, demand will drop and so will the price.
