Default Re: New Sti Vs Evo Best Motoring!!!

About two months ago now, I was stuck trying to decide between an evo or an sti.

Aesthetics: I think both cars suffer from the someone was beaten with an ugly stick attack. Before I really took a look at the 06-07 Sti's I believed the evo was a far more attractive car, from the outside only. It just seemed to be more aggressive and looked like the car was shot up with some roids. Then I saw an 07 STI at the dealership, I liked the new look of the headlights, and believe it or not the airplane style grill started to grow on me. The car seemed a little more refined, a litte more grown up, but the huge fenders were still there and the interior was leagues ahead of the evo's.

Peformance: Stock the evo is definitely faster, or faster feeling than the 07 STI, I believe this is due to the evo's higher amount of boost stock. However the sti feels a little better down low; I'm sure the sti's better lown down grunt is from the extra half liter it has over the evo. I also liked the gear box of the STI a lot more than that of the evo's, the STI's gear box was so tight and I liked the feeling that I was actually clicking into a gear, not falling into one.

Drivability: I think the evo and sti can both be awesome dd cars, but the sti just seems so much more natural, I have to agree with another poster, that the evo feels a bit more like a track car stock. I strongly believe this was because the evo was designed to be fairly tuned from the factory (higher boost levels, way more electronics, etc). One thing I'm not a huge fan of on the STI is the short gears, it'd be nice if 4th was a lil longer or if the car revved to 8k+ stock (I'm used to high reving k-series motors 9k+ lol)

At the end of the day, I liked the smoother drivability of the sti, the more refined interior, and the cleaner body style of the 07 STI. So there's my why I bought an STI over an evo and a what I don't really like now that I've got one all in one thread haha.

P.S. I'm not looking to start any wars, just my opinion on two cars. I wouldn't mind having an evo as well, just for kicks-

Those opinions coincide with pretty much everyone's. The Evo feels faster and a little more peaky, much more responsive and aggressive. The Sti has fatter powerband and softer controls, but a smoother ride and gobs of grip.

The interior is subjective, I like the dash layout of the 02-07 STi by far with its electronic gauges and gunmetal colored console. The rest of the Evo's interior (steering wheel to the back seat) is far superior in both form and function. The Evo's Recaros are light years better. The black/gray was more attractive compared to the STi blue interior, which was a bit much for me...

The only reason why I never got an STi was the blue interior. I just could not get past it. I liked the limited but didn't want the sunroof. I can't wait to get my 08 STi!!!

They have poor consumer ratings, and i never can or could see myself owning one.

I'm not saying the EVO is unreliable as i have never read up on the matter. However, with friends who have owned galants, GSX's, other eclipses etc i have seen and heard my fair share of unreliability. And from a manufacturing stand point, if they can't do it right with all of their cars, i wouldn't own one of their cars.

Anyways it's all apples and oranges really, everyone has their own personal preference. Anyone can took good care of an unreliable car and keep it in good working order. Anyone can break a reliable car. Hell... with enough money anyone can make a slow car fast.

Man... i am in a ranting mood tonight.

Anyways... when can we expect a true comparison video?
My friend is a tech @ a Subaru dealership and after working there he told me that he was glad that he didn't buy an STI. Sees them in there all the time.

Even more so the WRX's are in there because of their glass transmissions which is why he left his 07 WRX completely stock and eventually sold it.

But like you said, if a person doesn't beat the car and keeps up with regular maintenence then I'm sure most people won't have a problem with the Evo or the STI.

I'd be interested to know what the STIs were in the shop for. I know quite a few people with them, who aren't necessarily nice to their cars (autocrossers) and none have had major problems. I do know an evo owner or two at stock power levels that need a new clutch after one season of autocross though

I'm surprised by those who drove both and prefer the STi shifter to the Evo shifter feel. I thought the Evo's 5 speed was much shorter and more precise. The STi shifter seemed to have a lot of play comparatively IMO.

Please explain. Mitsu has been notoriously week in the warranty department for the Evo. Can I take my car to Hyundai now?

I hope you aren't serious...4G63 vs the EJ20. Has the STI even broken the 1000 horsepower mark without N02 yet? If so how many? I know multiple Evo's have done it from different tuners, setups, and shops. I really don't feel like getting into this.

The STI's were in the shop for a blown clutch, blown transmission (I don't know how this person accomplished this seeing as how the STI's trannys are bullet proof) and the other one had a whole bunch of stuff going on in the engine bay that needed fixing.

One was completely stock with 55k on the odo and it needed a crap load of stuff replaced that wasn't regular maintenence.

And yes the Evo's clutches aren't that great, but hey how many STI's can put over 400wheel horsepower/torque on the STOCK (key word here) turbo without N02?

My friend has an Evo VIII with 365awhp/360tq on stock clutch with 50k on the odo. Course he hasn't launched it many times but it doesn't slip.

Heck I've seen someone cut a 12.9 or a 12.8 in a bone stock Evo...later that night he needed a new clutch. lol

Personally I'm more interested in "usable power", who really gives a isht about 1000hp??? Oh yeah, anyone easily impressed with a number... Good power means area under the curve, and both engines are fantastic in this respect. 1000hp is still impressive, just entirely completely unrealistic.

Everyone knows the legendary 4G63 (cue "ooohs and aaahs" from the audience) is capable of some incredible numbers, but once you throw in the Evo's brittle drivetrain and mediocre build quality, it becomes a tossup for ownership as an only car if you get to regular drag or track events. Some of the biggest problems I have with my Evo have to do with its durability and build quality. 6sp heat-related failures on the track, more creaks squeaks and rattles than I care to list at only 20k miles, the sub-par clutch that costs your firstborn to replace, brittle transfer case, etc... I have read countless threads on EvoM listing the same problems over and over and over and over and over....
The car does its thing extremely well and is very very capable, but it can be awfully temperamental. I love the way it drives, but its certainly not the end-all be-all of performance cars. STi's have some issues too such as the smallish turbo and less-edgy driving, but (IMO) they just don't have the reliability problems as the Evo series. The Boxer engines are also capable of great power, it just costs a bit more than the 4G63. Your arguments about the small turbos are moot, considering you're including aftermarket parts, bolt ons and tunning, and this means a turbo is an easy upgrade in the greater scheme of things. I too wish Subaru included a fatter turbo, but it works pretty well for the vast majority of drivers who don't want huge hp.

I don't understand how the STi owners you commented on were having so many problems, they either had lemons or were abusing the living hell out of them. You're right, a borked STi 6sp is pretty rare.

Didn't AMS do some recent work probing the STi and were blown away by how much power they could get from it? Something in the tune of 410 lb ft of torque, and 350whp after intake, MBC TBE, and tune... They also commented with the same mods on an Evo IX, resulted in 40 less torque... The boxers produce better midrange power but the small turbo kinda poops out at high rpm where the Evo's turbo has longer legs, since hp is calculated with rpm it will of course produce higher hp numbers with a larger turbo. Anyways, just something to think about.

I'm not saying the STi is the end-all be-all performance car either, but I see a lot of fanboys claiming either STi or Evo IS the best, and I just like to keep things in perspective because they aren't better/worse, just different.
