I remember when my dreams came true in late 2003 and I was at the dealership telling them exactly what I wanted. You could see the fear in their eyes as they explained to a 25 year old that the car had no radio. I told them I could care less about floor mats, speakers, a radio, or anything else like that for that matter. I wanted an Aspen White STi and that was that. That is what the STi is all about. It's the semi-poorman's Porsche 911 GT3 RS. If bells and whistles are the direction Subaru is going with the STi, then they should definitely expand the STi to multiple trim lines; specifically lightweight and fully loaded.

I completely agree. A spec C version for the U.S. seems appropriate.

I have to agree with all of the haters. If, in the future I look for another car and SOA is still perpetrating this hatchback crap on us, I will probably buy a Legacy with the H-6, turbo charge it, turbo back exhaust, AP, and well the list goes on.... that way I would have a sedan instead of a hatch, more displacement and maybe more power. Hmmmmmmm, Hell SOA, go ahead and trash the STI, I just might make a Porche killer out of a Legacy.

P.s. I won't be getting rid of my 06 anytime soon it appears.

I really hope the new STI does well, but honestly I think it will tank as it seems to me they are missing their target demographic with this car.
I think I'm their target audience: middle-aged, children, decent income, wants performance but more likely to tote kids to practice than go to a track (but entertains the idea of track days)...bingo.
  • I have two kids so I need adequate rear seats, and that rules out two-seaters.
  • I want the safety and comfort features, since this would be a family car and I'm not getting any younger.
  • I'm a 40 year-old professional, so I really don't want anything boy-racer in appearance (such as a massive combat wing on the trunk of a sedan). My '07 wagon with a fart pipe pushes the boundaries as it is. However, this STI styling is sportier than the Legacy and I find it more appealing.
  • I live in a snowy area and want AWD, so that rules out RWD cars in similar price range.
  • The performance is still more than enough to get my groceries, backpacks, jackets, and sports equipment home after daycare pickup.
  • I'm not into modding cars, so I want something that kicks butt right out of the dealership.
  • A wagon (or hatch) is far more desirable than a sedan since I actually have to carry stuff often
I'm trying to come up with a list of other cars near $40K that fulfill what I want but not much is coming to mind.

Oh, and I forgot to mention.....put me on the apparently short list of " I LIKE IT, I WANT ONE!"

and, I'll make my 06 a dedicated track whore....

Ditto. In my mind there is no car that will do it all for 40K - plus, I know how easy it will be to get another 50 hp out of it (downpipe/tune). I'm glad they civilized it a bit; my brother has an 06 and while it is fun to drive, it is rough, it clunks and rattles over bumps and the interior feels cheap. Great for a track car, but not something I want to live with daily.

Plus, I FREAKIN' HATE THE FRAMELESS WINDOWS! Thank god they went to frames - every time I shut my door with the window half way down it rattles like a thirty year old Dodge...

Today I thought of another feature exclusive to this car at this price point: boxer engine rumble!

That signature low gurgle adds a lot to the driving experience for me, performance numbers be damned!

The only other turbocharged, AWD, 4-seater, boxer-engined car I could think of is a Porsche Turbo at $126,000! Are there any others that I don't know about?
