I am looking for an intake.

I really have no idea which will set off the CEL and which wont.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

JR

Shorty or CAI? Does it not matter?

perrin and turbo xs advertise that their shorties do not trigger a cel.
if you search (like i have) the various subaru sites you will find wide variances of opinion regarding intakes...
many owners claim cai's are a waste on our cars.
injen and easystreet both say the injen cai offers significant gains w/o any problems
some like the foam filters...
some hate them and say the oil messes up the maf sensor
some claim drop in filters are as effective as intakes up until the point that you upgrade the turbo or reach high hp situations.
some like the blitz sus, some say it doesn't filter enough...

i for one would like to try one. after removing the silencer and scoop, and doing a diy cai i had horrible gas mileage.
so now i am back to stock with just a hacked off silencer.

here you go.... i have tried these on the sti - aem cold air, stock, stock hacked with drop in kn filter and apexi shorty..

shorty goes in next week ( i expect to like it) but next to that the kn drop in was sweet and trouble free. ( for sale btw) $30.
and there was earlier boost noticed.

The Blitz SUS filter has always given the most gains of any intake we have ever tested. Bar none. We actually improved it even further by making a new velocity stack adaptor recently. We call it a Godspeed SUS intake although you can use the adaptor with any filter you wish if you prefer.

dan,
how is the filtering capabilities of the sus?
based on internet rumors, speculation, and whatnot... that seems to be the biggest knock against the blitz filter.
i am curious if this is true or theory.

www.mkiv.com (under techincal)... that test has been posted numerous times and since the yare a community and dont make money off of the blitz or any other filter they would have no reason to make up stuff or to go in one filter's favor... they showed the blitz being next to last in filtering, but still good gains. The apexi was shown to give the most hp and the best filtering of all 4. Although, im not noticing a power difference between it and the injen CAI... I am going to have my mechanic make on himself and we are going to see about getting it dynoed soon. The sound is incredible and so... who knows. Im putting a K&N extreme replacement filter on too, so it will be better flowing adn what not, so we'll see what happens.

Although I will say mario from ESX got 27whp after tuning the CAI...

Hi Dan,

Have you tested the Apexi filters ? They filter far better than the Blitz so I am wondering about the power differences between the two ?

Also wondering about your DP. I hear it doesn't trigger a check engine light. Is this because of an electronic adapter you use or because of it's physical design? Does your DP have cats in it or does it eliminate the factory cat ?

I like my APS cool air intake. I'm planning on getting the dr 650 fmic and they said i would need it. i dont go cai personally, but i guess its nice to experience new things... i've always had short rams on my previous cars, supra mk IV, self-built b18 honda civic, maxima, and now my sti... it sounds really good as for gains i'm not sure, but i like it. hope it helps
thanks

currently i am trying to decide between:
the new k&n rai with heat shield
the apexi with the induction box
the injen cai.
the injen worries me the most becuase it sits about even with the fog light cover and that seems a bit low to me fwiw

I like the Apexi filters. Now in terms of the Blitz filtering that test you cited is really really old. All the intakes since then have been changed I think so it really bears little relevance now. I use an SUS on my daily driver as does my little brother. Neither are performance cars and neither has had any ill effects. The Apexi does not flow as well as the SUS despite the test. I have seen this on the dyno over and over again. Then you have to look and see if this is due to the filtering element, the shape of the element, the adaptor and shape of the adaptor, etc. . .
I recently ran some tests on my intake and I was surprised how much fuel I had to add to the map.

My downpipes are the only one of their kind. They offer a wideband bung for tuning and a CEL fix that does not require any wiring or electrical modifications. Just plug in sensor and you're ready to go.
