I would hold off to go over to synthetic. I didn't make the switch till way later. I use maybe 1qt per 3000mi oil changes. Of course now that I have the amsoil in there and am not doing changes for a much much longer time everything still seems to be the same.

Subaru considers 1 quart every 1000 miles within spec. I had Mobil1 in my car when I went to get it tuned. The tuner told me to change it for dino because it'll burn alot of the M1. Sure enough, if I was driving the car hard, I'd have to top it off almost every night. I switched to Castrol GTX 5W-30, and the burning has slowed down big time.

I don't really burn oil unless I'm flogging the poop out of the car at the track or doing some extended backroad carving (like 2-3 days in a row.) Even then, my oil might go from the notch to 1/2 after about 4000km, which I believe is very low oil consumption. Just check your oil once per week. I have 43,000km on my 05 with no engine problems. I also broke mine in semi-hard with 7km on it...

Another thing, our cars will burn a little oil here or there.

Lastly, check your oil filter and make sure it isn't slowly leaking. Also, since you are still breaking the car in, you might find that your oil consumption drops drastically after 5-6K. Keep on the dino oil and give her hell. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Mine doesn't burn oil... yet.

The guy I bought it from ran Penzoil mineral oil for 9700 miles. When I purchased the car I ran Castrol Syntec 5w30 with no oil use, then on the next change I switched to Mobil 1 5w30, which the car burned. I went back to Syntec 5w30 and there was no more burning, and no I'm running German Syntec 0w30 and it hasn't used a drop.

Check your oil at every fuel fill-up just to keep tabs on it. It isn't uncommon for high performance cars to use a bit of oil.

I drove it like I stole it from day 1, Mobil 1 5-30 since day 1, haven;t burned more than a 1/4 quart in 5K, I'm at 31000 miles today.

Knocking on wood.

*addendum* I always keep an eye on the level and don't usually get too far above 3K between changes.

Break it in by the book, I'm sure the engineers are more knowledgable about the subject IMO. Broke mine in easy & dont burn a drop. The dipstick reads funny on 'em though. From previous oil changes I've determined the side that reads higher is correct. Just be sure it sits a bit before checking. I'd do a oil change, fill it up & keep an eye on it now that you know it was full. Yes they are known to burn oil, but the guys that do extended oil changes w/out checking are the ones burning motors. Great cars though, enjoy it.

The engineers probably don't write the manuals and the legal department probably has a lot of say as to the words that go into the manual as to avoid liability for damages. They probably tell you to break it in safely because there is less of a chance of someone getting into an accident.

With that said, we're all still waiting for hard evidence that an aggressive break-in is better than a soft break-in. My car runs great though.

There is tons of "hard" evidence that the "Soft" breakin is complete BS... All you have to do is believe it and what most of us are saying!

I broke mine in somewhat according to the recommendations. But, I did do several hard runs past 4000rpms. I didn't flog it, but it wasn't exactly according to what they tell you. Overall, I was definitely more gentle then hard during this breakin period.

My car ended up burning oil. 1/2qt every 1000 miles. Maybe a little more. Well, given all the tuning I do and my need for acceleration, I flog my car all the time. It now hardly burns any oil. I just changed my oil yesterday (3000 miles) and it was basically almost still full. I now have ~ 20,000 miles on the car.
