IWSTI Addict since: Jun 2004 Trader Rating: (14) | For those of you who don't know, the GT28RS (aka Disco Potato) is a very popular turbo in the 240SX world. It's very commonly used on SR20's, and it is now also being used extensively on Audis and VW's. My question is, why not use it on the STi? It's a bit smaller than a GT30R, so it will make less power but have better spool. In theory, it could make similar power to an FP Green (maybe a bit more) but possibly spool better due to its ball bearing design. Any thoughts? This ad is not endorsed by this member. | S204 Racer | i just checked up on the atp set up the other day. **** them, they obviously don't care about realeasing it. i was excited about it, but i wouldn't get one now if it ever comes out. gt28rs is on my list, maybe i'll go with it...but you should first |

IWSTI Addict since: Jun 2004 Trader Rating: (14) | That's strange, they are very prompt with their Audi/VW kits and they are widely used. The only complaints I have heard about them is poor software but that problem doesn't really apply to us, as we use custom tuning. |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | I was going to buy a 180SX so I did some hanging around the 240SX forums. The general concencus is that the GT28RS isn't as good as some of it's competitors. Most people recommend the GT28R or GT2871R over the GT28RS. The GT28R is capable of similar performance and costs less, and the GT2871R is capable of making more power for close to the same amount of money. The GT28RS isn't worth much more than 300 whp on an SR20DET, I think it's just too small to be worth considering for our cars. The transient boost response of the Disco Potato is amazing though, but that's something you'll notice with any ball bearing turbo. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | I dont think it would make any more power then a 20g, it might spool better, but definitly wouldnt have as much top end. Not to mention it would probably cost alot more becuase its not a bolt on. What kind of cfm's do they flow? I know they are very popular coming from a vw, and people were making about 300whp on 1.8t's with them. I think it may just be too similar to a vf39 and not have much top end. |

I'm not really one to buy a kit anyways, I'd rather piece together my own components. I was just curious why the smaller Garrett turbos aren't ever used on Subies. |

IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2005 Trader Rating: (14) | Oh man, this was the ultimate frustration. We were working with ATP for awhile on a bolt-on GT3071 for the STi but that project never came to fruition. The pricing would have been less than a Green, it would have made more power, and would have spooled better. Preliminary testing was going great but for whatever reason that project was nixxed. I can't tell you how excited we were about that turbo but oh well... Anyways, the GT28RS is actually a very small turbo and we thought about testing that on the 2.0L WRX. We ended up testing the GT28R and it didn't make any more power than a VF34 on a 2.0L, plus it was more expensive because you needed to adapt it for bolt on use. The GT28RS is actually smaller than the GT28R so I think that would be way too small for the 2.5L block. However, the GT2871 was one we were curious about on the 2.0L motor and we never ended up testing that. That might be like a better TD06-18G for the STi.
