If you ever upgrade to bigger turbo with higher boost you will absolutely need one. My catch can when I had my VF39 never had a drop in it. When I switched to my setup now, there is a minimal amount that accumulates in the can. They key is to put some media in the can that the oil particles can stick too.... |

IWSTI Addict since: Jul 2005 Trader Rating: (2) | No one needs any of their mods, they just like to have them. So no one is going to give you a 'Hell Yea' on a catch can ![]() A catch can keeps the engine bay cleaner from blow-by oil. IMO I wanted one so my engine bay stayed cleaner than usual. Install is not hard at all. -A |

The purpose of catch cans is twofold: 1, they trap blow-by liquids that would otherwise get into the intake which, as Wolfplayer already stated, reduces the octane of the intake charge; 2, they act as an "early warning system" for your lower end. IOW, if they fill up all the time you've got a motor with bad blow-by that is on its way out. Others are correct in that you probably don't need one at all with the stock turbo, but if you go "big", you'll want one - preferably two. | |

IWSTI Addict since: Mar 2005 Trader Rating: (1) | I've heard running the snot out of your STi (even with the stock snail) can cause blowby oil to the intake which can first show up in the TMIC. If you pull your TMIC and there is oil then maybe a catch can is for you......Please correct me if I'm wrong..... ![]() Here's a link for DIY.... http://www.pbase.com/rsrock/oil_catch_can I've seen other versions with fuel filters with paper elements in them..... | Silver Member | when I removed my stock TMIC to do my oil pressure gauge, I set the IC in a cardboard box for a couple days, outlet down. When I went to reinstall it there was a little oil in the cardboard box that had run out of the IC. This was within the first 3000 miles on my odo, so the engine is still far from fully broken in, but I want to add a catch can just to keep the IC clean. This ad is not endorsed by this member.
