I actually found that the best method for draining the tank is just by purchasing a simple NEW not used Kerosene Pump. It's cheap, $3.00, and it easily drains the entire tank of water. Just stick the tube into the deepest part of the resevoir and pump the water out. Beats pushing the button all day.

It takes 8 minutes to drain a completely full tank.

I have been thru two winters of daily freeze/ thaw cycle we get in the midwest. No problems. Distilled water only.

The official answer from Subaru of America is to keep the IC water spray resevoir half full during the winter time.

If you leave the resevoir empty the "i/c water spray" light will stay on. That light drives me crazy when it is on(esp. when the tank is getting low & it "flashes" as I drive). I would just leave it half full as Subaru suggests or put a little rubbing alcohol in it.

I emptied mine, but the IC light stayed lit. I put in a mixture of water, windshield wash and alcohol. It's about 1/4 full. I will just siphon it out after the cold weather leaves us.

wow, this IS an old thread. But if anyone is looking for the info.. use this to pump out the water:

Quote:
Model No: 648756
Suction Gun
For filling and draining transmissions, differentials, gear cases, etc. Includes 12" flexible delivery tube. Knurled non-slip barrel. One piece die-cast head. Use with any non-corrosive lubricant.
I mainly use this for changing the rear diff oil, but it can double as a quick pump too. (just be sure to clean it out real good!)

And the water freezing is fine as long as you don't have it too full, and like the previous poster said, don't hit the I/C button, you don't want to burn out the pump. If it's cold enough to freeze the water in your I/C spray tank then you don't even need to worry about spraying your I/C, cause the cold air will be good enough.
