Default Best Turbo Upgrade For The 06 STi

I bought and 06 STi and was wondering, what would be the best turbo upgrade? Should i go HKS or GReddy? The GReddy is fairly new but i've read an article about it. It seems to be the best Turo upgrade right now. Anyone else have any suggestions?

what do you want to do? Where are you getting your info that is telling you that HKS or Greddy are the best right now??? I have seen like 2 cars with either, whereas there are THOUSANDS running mitubishi turbos (18G-20G) and turbos built off them (Green, Red, Superzilla) or Garrets (gt30-35 etc)

I almost never see HKS or Greddy turbos on Subaru's. There has to be a reason for that.

Start out by telling us your power goals, and how you want the car to drive, and what type of driving you will mainly be doing.

Yeah your post is much to general! Are you looking for a good bolton drop in turbo? Get a deadbolt TD06-20G, or the FP green. Want over 400 whp with all the other add ons? Try the GT30, GT35..We need more info..

If you are looking for a good everyday driving turbo, that will also work very well at the drag strip, Look at a TD06-20G. Figure on roughly 400 crank hp with a normal tune and the supporting mods.

You will need (to run it safely)

Fuel injects
Pump
Engine management.

You will obviously want
Full turboback exh

You will probably want
Better intercooler. A big bar/plate TMIC will work worlds better than stock, have ZERO lag and retains your front end safety.
A FMIC will work very well too, but will add a bit of lag and you lose the bumper beam. Some kits give you a beam, but its not protective in the least, its more something to mount the fmic core on.

What you really should look into for safety sake (and more power!)
Alcohol injection.

A 20G, FMIC and a good tune will yeild you low 12's at over 110mph easily (if tuned and driven well) with little to no lag increase from stock.

I'am trying to get about 450 WHP while having it as an everyday driver. and i think the new Modified Mag has a full section of a new turbo from GReddy for STi's, i'll try to find it.

Its probably a T67 (25g). If you want that kind of power on a daily basis I would seriously look at upgrading the internals. If you want that power on pump gas you need a GT35R, or maybe a well tuned FP Red. On methanol you can easily hit that with a bolt-on sz55 (480whp). I would do a lot of research but seriously consider a block upgrade if you want that kind of power for a daily driver.

450whp on stock internals for a daily driver is gonna be pushing it.

The first thing you need to know is to stay far away from any and all magazines for your mod path. These are the same magazines that claimed 13whp from a catback on a WRX, when anyone that has a dyno can tell you a catback on an otherwise stock WRX produces roughly 2-3whp, if ANY gains at all.
And Modified is absolutely one of the worst magazines around as far as good advice. They are a VERY sponsor driven magazine. In other words, if they print an excellent review of a product, you can be sure that manufacturer paid a lot of money for that review to take place and be printed, and the testing procedures were 100% dictated by the manufacturer.

Now, the Greddy kit IS decent. But trust me when I say that there are MUCH better, or just as good solutions for MUCH less money available through the major tuners on this board and NASIOC. For 450whp you should be looking at liek a rotated mount GT35r and a BIG front mount.

One thing you should know is that at 450whp, our motors tend to not last very long. If you are setting that number as your goal, you should be planning to do at least forged pistons right off the bat, as they will be the weak point.
Then plan on breaking axles if you go to the track often.

I can also tell you that while the power is a rush, driving a 450whp awd subaru around as your every day car gets old REAL fast. For a daily driver I recommend sticking to 375whp or less. Because that number can be easily attained with a setup that still have a good low end and smooth driveability.

yeah I agree with Dave and from a long past of experience, do not believe everything you read. Espeially in Ricer mags! You seem to be stuck on Greddy and there are better choices with lifetime warrenties as well. Also dont be so focused on the HP number unless you have a track goal in mind, which I think you are talking about daily driving. You will spend a fortune to keep that setup running over the long run!

If you looked closely at the modified issue, its states that they used a 20g and got 380 whp. This is really close to the numbers people on this site have achieved.

always best to build it up slowly, unless you KNOW what you are planning to do with the car (drag strip, trackdays/time attack, daily driver, weekend, autox, etc etc.)
