Cool Turbo Timers

New STI ownwer. Just got a (Japan) STI 2003.
I live in Jamaica.
Most WRX owners here use turbo timers on their vehicles. Is a turbo timer necessary?

Wink

It depends on what turbo you are using. The STi does not require a turbo timer as it is water cooled.

Welcome, and dont forget to post some pics of your new STI!
I think the consensus would be you dont actually need a turbo timer, the turbo'll do just fine without it, but i class it as a 'nice to have'

Out here in hot n humid Singapore i can use mine for 2 things
1) you can set the car running, get the aircon cooling before you get in, & have the option to lock & leave it
2) after shutting down, trigger it to run the cooling fans for 5 min or so, blow out some of the furnace temperatures from under the hood. I figure it cant hurt anything.

Oh yeah, and the Apexi i got also has a voltmeter, another 'nice to have', and it looks neat mounted down by the IC spray/Foglights switchs

Cool

Thanks for the replies. Will post pictures ASAP.

I am DIY enthusiast, does anybody have pictures or instructions on changing the oil & filter. What would be the purolator equivalent, just in case the Subaru dealer here doesn't have the replacement filter.

Nope no need for a turbo timer on an STi. The STi already has a system from the factory that circulates untill the turbo cools down. There are posts and some nice articles online that outline exactly how it works.

Runs coolant through the turbo to aid the oil in cooling.

WOW i defenately learned something new today lol. i knew the turbo was water and oil cooled. it never dawned on me that you dont need to let it run before you shut it off . even if im late to work, i sit in my car for another minute or so and let it "chill" for a bit. so you dont have to let it cool at all...EVAR? good to hear.

for the origional question, you can kill 2 birds with one stone and do what i did and buy an aftermarket alarm (my weapon of chioce was the viper 791 with 2 way pager which also has a turbo time function) i just havnt hooked it up yet.

Still good habit. Running the oil and coolant temps up above operating temps and turning the car off right after is a bad idea.

FYI - 2003 Japan Model Year was the same as the 2004 USA Model Year.
