Default New Intercooler Design

Has anyone (owner or tuner) ever installed a large fmic core in the tmic location instead of just larger tmic?

why would you want to do that instead of going with a larger tmic, what would be the purpose?

The core would be 950"sq, 40% larger than aftermarket tmics, 200% larger than stock. Larger is colder...You could get the cooling of an fmic without the tubing...sort-of a super-big-tmic

Larger is indeed colder up to a point, but keep in mind that a larger hunk of metal retains more heat than a small hunk of metal.

how about two 9" fans on the bottom and a large stainless turbo heat shield to prevent it from retaining heat in the first place?

I know for a fact that having a bigger core shoved in there is not always the answer or actually a help, especially with aftermarket turbos as I have been told by my customers. My biggest suggestion is if you're going to test this stuff just get all the data and compare it. That's going to be your best bet. Just shoving a big core in there is not the solution, but if you get data/proof as to it work efficiently, then by all means give it a go! Make sure to use the whole surface of the intercooler core as well (use an air diverter i guess). As I know that the back half of my stock TMIC was dirty, yet the front half was clean as new (I am guessing only the rear half got the majority of the air). GL on whatever you end up doing and be sure to post the data afterwords.

Sounds like a great project. I don't speak fluent IC, probably not much past IC 101 in fact. But the concept seems sound. As long as you can feed it enough cool air to keep heat soak at bay it should be a definite plus.

Surfa2527,

I actually like the top mount on H block design and would like to see if it can compete with a frontmount at a cooling and flow level without chopping up my brand new car with 800 miles on it. I haven't seen an sti fmic I'm impressed with that didn't involve replacing the rad. I haven't seen ANY sti fmic dynos I'm impressed with either.

Staticx313,

That's good info, I'm not impressed with the "larger" tmic's I've seen either. Did you see my reply to your intake manifold casting project? Why would you make a performance part and still leave smog equipment in the design? You need to go all the way to the head like the spec C intake. A manifold that deletes the tumbler valves AND takes top feed injectors AND makes more top end power would be worth the money to cast...otherwise anyone could copy your intake by just paying a fab shop to cut out the center section of the stock manifold and make it like yours.

wdb,

Just the fans would stop the heatsoak, weather or not it could compete with an fmic at speed with any amount of proper ducting remains to be seen. Your trunk conversion is the bomb, I saw my first one in person on Friday!
