Default How long did your new invidia downpipe have that "new exhaust" smell.

About 3 weeks ago i installed an invidia downpipe on my sti, Used all new gaskets , everything torqued, no leaks... Once i got her on the highway the downpipe started to smell, the new exhaust smell, almost like oil burning or plastic burning. I figured the smell would be gone in a few days. 3 weeks later its still here and annoying the **** out of me.

Ive been around catless cars since i started driving, its not the catless smell, i even had cars that ive driven open downpipe. also been in other catless sti's and they dont have the smell. Its not the rubber hose thats near the dp, because in a rage i cut it off lol.

Yesterday and today i jacked up the car and cleaned the downpipe off with some simple green, in hopes of getting some of the coating/oil off. This seems to have helped a little but the smell is still there. I checked the torque on everything , and also inspected the entire exhaust for and plastic bags or such...

Its gotten to the point where im goin to put the stock downpipe on tommorow , im very picky about the smells, i stay away from trucks on the highway , smoking cars... ect.

How long did your invidia downpipe have the new smell??

i can't even smell mine at all....and it never had a bad smell either...the first time i started it up it smelled like no cats right away, but that goes away after a while and you can only smell it when the car is just sitting around
while driving....nope

Isn't there a rubber AC runoff hose that hits the aftermarket DP causing it to melt? Maybe that's where the smell is coming from???

i had cut it after the installation, i didnt want to risk burning rubber, and consistantly breathing dioxins(Potent carginagen& Mutagen) evertime i drive the car.

I tried the water thing for the past week. Thats why i went to simple green, of course i clean the residue off left by simple green.

Its like freshly baked apple pie resting on the window sill.

You should only get the new exhaust smell for the first 50 miles or so. After that my cause of smell was the rubber drain hose burning. Be sure to cut it or move it out of the way. Re-check it to make sure as the hose can move in and out of the whole kind of far. Also every time you touch the exhaust your fingers leave a oily residue on it and that will also cause a burning smell. Hope this helps.

Cool

If you are that picky about smells, why did you go with a catless DP in the first place?

Not sure how long your DP will smell, but after installing my Helix, I went on a road trip... 7 hrs later of fun mountain twisty roads, I could no longer smell or see any of the smoke involved in the mounting of new exhaust.

well, the smell is alot more faint now, expecially after being quite aggessive with the car for the past few days. Its to the point where only if im really getting on the car will i smell it. My downpipe did seem especially oilly in the original package, i guess some guys get lucky and get barely any oil to burn off.

also the catless smell never bothered me, its just smells of burning rubber, grease, diesel, at i find offensive. -
