You're pushing exhaust gasses through the head gasket and into the coolant passages. You have to remove the heads and replace the head gaskets. I recommend having the heads skimmed, using head studs, and new OEM gaskets when you put it back together.

Honestly, this is a pretty easy fix. I've had customers does this in a couple weeks in their garage and taking their heads in to be skimmed and vacuum seat tested.

This is a very good possibility but first things first. To the OP, are there any coolant leaks what so ever? Have you topped off the coolant correctly and re-bled the cooling system correctly. Have you pressure tested the cooling system yet?

How many miles are on this car?

yeah i think its the heads cause now that ive been looking into it when i boost it feels like im loosing everything sometimes at like 5500 its like it just loses boost i figure if its the heads i might as well change the pump the belt plugs and see how the clutch and flywheel look because the engine has to come out to remove the heads if im not mistaken

I had the exact same issue with my 2010 STI, I too was told its the HG. I did a ton of research and not one person pointed me in any other direction EXCEPT for one. It was suggested that the radiator cap might be bad. When the car is driven hard, pressure builds in the coolant system and if the radiator cap spring had gone bad, can show the same exact signs that a blown HG shows. I replaced my radiator caps and my car is running perfect. There are other ways to test this. Get the coolant checked for oil/exhaust fumes, check the oil for coolant... ect... but for something around $45 dollars VS pulling the heads and all that... its worth a shot.

I was having the same exact issues you described in your original post. BTW

I'd prefer to diag before recommending a head gasket job. I've had head gasket failure on other cars that showed similar issues. But I've learned that head gaskets can be tricky on all cars since every car is different.

I didn't even think about the radiator cap being an issue. I think its definitely worth a shot before doing the big job. Just imagine getting beat by a radiator cap after you've pulled the heads lol

Pretty easy to diagnose. OP, do you see tiny black particles floating around in your overflow?
