Default limits of stock intake

I have a '12 STi.

Bought and installed all the parts from cobb for their Stage 2+SF upgrades. I really can't handle the intake noise so I re-tuned, took it out and went back to the stock intake.

I would like to get to Stage 3 power though.

So my questions are:

What are the limits of the stock intake?
Is there a more flowing air filter that can be used in the stock intake?
Are any of the aftermarket CAI quieter than the cobbSF?

Thanks for any help.

The Cobb SF intake is probably one of the loudest intakes out there. You can add drop-in filter that gets better airflow. Also, I think you may be able to drill a couple big holes on the bottom of the intake box to keep the stock look.

You can probably put in a drop in filter, The factory intake is really good. a lot of plumbing but works really effectively.

To be honest. Even with a cold air intake you might see 10-15whp gain on high hp setup. If you're looking for power, 10whp isn't something that super noticeable.

First of all you cannot run cobb stage 2 map with stock intake, you will kill your engine, unless you get it protuned.
Once you get a pro tune, stock intake limit is more than your stock turbo can handle.

Is this something for new STI's? As far as I know you have always been able to go stage two with the stock intake. It's the downpipe that must be replaced for a stage two map.

Its been like this since 08+
Its exetremly important, subies since 08 became very sensitive to any performance mods. If op doesnt get proper tune, he will blow up his engine and thats a gurantee, today or tomorrow, all matter of time when. This is the reason people having problems with this engines, they think small changes in parts dont need tune. Even if you change filter to hi flow in stock intake needs a tune.

Cobb has always provided appropriate maps for Stage 2, which does not include any intake mods.
Stage 2 with air box mods are generally referred to as Stage 2+.

Here's Cobbs map notes for 2012 compatible maps:
Map Notes for 2008-2014 STI - Customer Support Center - Confluence

Op just use exactly the specified parts for a given map. I see they do have a map for a Cosworth panel filer too, but at stage two power levels all you gain from air box mods is noise.

Actually, the biggest difference an intake makes in stage 2 is faster spool and imo it's a bit much, it actually spools too early for my tastes, it hard to accelerate slowly/normally without the turbo spooling and costs about 10% fuel economy vs stock intake as a result.

I wouldn't change intakes without a larger turbo after that experience.

he most likely flashed stage 2 with intake map since he got the intake, but since theres stage 2 map for stock intake then he should flash to that one and see how it runs.
