FWIW, there is a how-to article on NASIOC that shows how to do this. I'll try to find it.

rough idle on an 04 would possibly caused by the presence of AVCS filters. take it to a dealership and inform them of the TSB or remove them yourself.

This is the filter for the turbos oil supply line. It would not cause rough idle.

I would say that it would be BEST to replace the copper washers. Many would argue that it won't be necessary and they can be reused. They're cheap, why risk the increased possibility of a leak?

Torque Specs... adhere to them!

For the record, personally, I think it is best to purchase a new banjo bolt / filter along with new washers before doing this. Here are some pics from my website ...

Thanks for the pictures, wolf. got any pics of the used bolt and filter?

judging from the surface area of the filter, i'm questioning whether the filter can actually be clogged to an extent that would prove to be terminal unless you have a really bad oil filter and/or really dirty oil. this makes me want to keep it on.

obviously it's a maintenance part. this makes me wonder what other parts of the car should technically have maintenance intervals that don't.

I'm going to give my local subaru dealerships a call tomorrow and see if they have the parts in stock. my write up to follow... keep in mind my car only has a little over 9k so this may be uneventful.

Part numbers from wolfs pics(correct me if i'm wrong):

Banjo Bolt:
14445AA090

Copper Washers:
803912040

I;m pretty sure those washers are generic subaru washers used throughout the car. they should be in stock.

Thanks for the help Wolf!
Will this also be a problem for the guys with aftermarket turbos?
Can we use the OEM Subaru Banjo, Washer, Filter for aftermarket turbs? Or would we have to get specific fittings according to our turbs?
THANKS!
I think my car wold be broken by now if it wern't for threads like this..
