I'm with Wolf on this one, I would take it out regularly and clean it. With the filter out you run the risk of large contaminants getting in there and blocking the flow of oil internally. It doesn't look very hard to do and probably only needs to be done every 10-15K miles.

i've replaced the brass crush washers every time that I have removed the banjo bolt. just for peace of mind i guess.
