Default Re: Unrequited's Journal (#67 -- blacked out wrx interior, tints, avic-f90bt!)

I have a BIIIIIIIIIG update. I've taken the past couple months to get my car summer-ready. By summer-ready I mean more enjoyable to drive.

First thing I did was black out the interior, this took a couple steps.

First I plastidip'ed the trim on the dash because I wasn't ready to spend a couple hundred on black plastic. The pictures show them washed out and with gray spots, unfortunately they are "sticky" as hell and grab lint, ash, dust, etc. You have to clean them weekly to keep them beautiful. I'll try and get more pics when they are clean.

(all pics are click-able for high-res):

...it only took me about 3 hours and all in all with the air-vent trim, I only used a half-can of plastidip. I still have a can and a half to retouch and/or do the headliner trim. Oh, when you scratch it off eventually all you have to do is peel up a corner and pull the entire layer of plastidip off in one go. It doesn't stain, it comes off cleanly, and it's repairable with a half-hour of spray and a half-hour of drying time. Only thing is like I said before I need to keep a wet cloth to take off all the dust and crap which sticks to it.

...of course in the pics above you can see the latest addition, the new Pioneer Premiere-line Avic-f90bt. Ugh. You can read all the problems on avic411.com . Basically it'd be the best headunit ever, if they fixed the hundred-odd problems with the firmware, most of which they could have discovered by driving with one for 5 minutes.

What is cool is the voice command and bluetooth (integrated) phone craps work just fine. I even stealth-mounted the GPS antenna under the clock plastic (works 100%) and the voice mic is hidden away just next to the turbo gauge:

Next up is the rest of the black... I got a great deal on back seats, carpet, and door cards all from 3 separate people, that took the better part of the last two months to organize. But it's done. I'm keeping the front blue's because they provide some nice contrast, but the rest is all 2005 WRX. Driving feels so much more "right" now...

I AM HAPPY.

Oh and the car's tinted 35% all around. JOY!
