Yeah. It must've been really low on diff oil because I don't remember when it was changed. Probably 30K ago.

Anyway, I was up in Mammoth snowboarding and yesterday as we were getting ready to leave I found the rear passenger tire completely flat. It was also unrepairable because it had worn to the steel belt The other tires were fine, but will need to be changed in the next 1000 miles or so.

My friend and I put the donut spare and drove to the nearest shop but they didn't have my tire size. You'd think at a town that sees plenty of Subarus they would stock that size. So we had to drive 45 miles down to Bishop to try to get a new tire. Halfway there, I hear grinding noise and smell something burning. I pull over as soon as I can and we check...no smoke...can't figure out what the problem was. That stop right there probably saved the car, because it allowed the rear diff to cool. Another 24 miles and we get to Bishop, the smell came back, then I saw a lot of smoke coming out the back end.

I didn't see the flames myself, but my two passengers did. We got our IDs, phones and whatever we needed and got out. A cop happened to be right there and he put out the flames.

I did a search: Subaru Repair: WRX differential problems

That's pretty much what happened to me.

The car is in Bishop right now, but incredibly we must've caught the fire in time and had it put out because the tech up there said he replaced the fluid and everything seems fine. That, and alignment needs to be adjusted. Cost of repairs will be around $500.
